Weber Q Barbecues - Which one should I get? What is the Difference?

Confused About which Weber Q BBQ to get?

So you are thinking of buying a Weber Q but didn't realise there were so many? This article is designed to help you decide which one is right for you. For those of you who haven't come across the Weber Q barbecues before, they offer portable grilling solutions for lovers of charcoal, electric and gas outdoor cooking. However, this year sees the introduction of the mean looking Black Line series of Weber Q BBQs (Q's with a facelift to you and me) but I keep getting asked by potential customers, what differs in terms of functionality within the Weber Q Black Line range and is it worth the extra few bob? Well let's take a more in depth look at the Q's…

Charcoal

Weber Char-Q

Although Weber is famous for its charcoal kettle barbecues, they only adopt this fuelling method for one of their Q's, namely the Char-Q. With similar dimensions and cooking area as the Q220 Black Line, this grill allows the user to obtain that charcoal flavour traditionalists dream of and the top and bottom vents regulate the air flow to ensure food is thoroughly cooked and can be closed to extinguish the fire with minimal mess. The heat resistant nylon frame protects any surface it is placed on. RRP £200

Electric

Weber Q140

The beauty of the Q140 Electric barbecue is that with a flick of a switch, by the time you have unwrapped the food, you are ready for cooking. Of course the obvious drawback is that you need a power supply which somewhat limits the potential of portability on this model. However, a 1.8m cable gives you some flexibility on positioning. Similar dimensions as the Q100/Q120 barbecues and retails for around £200.

Gas

                                                   Weber Q100

The Q100 offers ultimate portability in terms of gas grilling for campers, holiday makers and those of you who love a day at the beach. Retailing at £179.99 (although you can pick these up cheaper if you look around on the web), the Q100 uses Weber's own gas cartridges (although adaptors are available for those of you happy to carry round a large patio gas bottle or to hook up to a caravan) that sit in the designated holsters and are good for around 10 sessions. These barbecues are lightweight at 16kg and will not take up too much room in your car boot measuring 69(w) x 40(d) x 60(h)cms. And as with all Weber Qs, built in handles and sturdy legs raising it off the surface are standard to the well loved design.

Weber Q120 Black Line

Now for the first of the Black Line's, the Q120. Expect to pay around £20 more for this model when compared with the Baby-Q above and for that you will gain two handy foldaway tables with built in tool holders. The only other difference, with the exception of the black shell, is an updated ignition switch - slightly larger and more obvious than its predecessor.

Weber Q200

Whereas the 100 Series is designed for a couple or small family, the 200's can cater for a small party. The Q200 has a 1806 square cm cooking area plus side tables as standard which will hold all your cooking sauces and condiments and in most cases comes with an ingenious collapsible rolling cart for hassle free transport and storage. On previous experience the Q200 & Q220 have been the big sellers of the season on account of their features and value for money.

Weber Q220 Black Line

Similar to the Q120 Blackline, the Q220 has a black cast aluminium shell but this time has a built in thermometer so you can check how the food is cooking without having to lift the lid and lose heat. It also caters for larger joints and whole poultry as it has a higher, more cavernous lid.

Weber Q300

Two burners instead of one, built in sturdy side tables and big enough to warrant a permanent solid cart, the Q300 series is the daddy of the Q's. The Q300 has an impressive 2994 square cm cooking area with twin cast iron cooking grates so that an additional griddle (sold separately) can be slotted in ones place.

Weber Q320 Black Line

As impressive as the Q300 is, Weber have bettered it with the Q320. This model comes with a handy warming rack and a handle mounted light, perfect for evening cooking. Both come with built in thermometers.
