Cooking on a Q BBQ

If you are an owner of a Q BBQ or looking into the cooking techniques to help you decide which BBQ to purchase, here is a quick rundown on the different cooking methods.

Despite what you are cooking, always cook with the lid on, this will enable you to have full control of the cooking temperature.

Direct Cooking - Grilling

If you are grilling something which takes less than 20 minutes to cook, you may want to use the direct cooking method. This is ideal for smaller cuts of meat and steaks.

Steps:

  • Switch the Burner(s) on full
  • Preheat the BBQ with the lid down for 5-10 minutes
  • Arrange the food on the BBQ and close the lid.

Please Note: Opening the lid of your BBQ will cause heat to escape and may affect your cooking times.

Indirect Cooking- Roasting/Baking

For Q1000, 1200, 2200 Models:

Before using the indirect method on a smaller Q BBQ, please ensure you have a roasting shield and rack, this will inhibit the food from burning on the underside. As you only have one ‘Q’ shaped burner, you do not have the option to move the food away from the heat and so using the accessories helps diffuse the heat and prevent burning.

Steps:

  • Switch the burner on full and pre-heat the BBQ for 5-10 minutes with the lid down.
  • Turn the burner to the low setting
  • Place the food in the centre of the cooking grate (using your Weber Q roasting rack and shield) and close the lid.

For Q3200 Models:

Steps:

  • Switch both burners on full and pre-heat the BBQ for 5-10 minutes, keeping your lid down.
  • Turn off the middle burner and place the food in the centre of the cooking grate over the unlit burner.
  • Close the lid.

Roasting on a Smaller Q and Q3200 is slightly different as a Q3200 has both a middle burner and an outside burner. You will find that with either of these BBQ’s the temperature will continue to rise the longer the BBQ is kept on. If you are wanting to roast on a Q, the temperature should be between 200 degrees Celsius and 225 degrees Celsius as you may find it hard to maintain a low temperature of 180 degrees Celsius.
